United Way of Westchester – 1982 to 1985
General Chairman 1984-1985
While Commissioner of Community Mental Health in Westchester County, New York, I became active with the United Way from 1982 to 1985. I was focused at the time on forging a public/private partnership among organizations providing health, mental health and social services to residents of the County. The United Way leadership appreciated my approach and in 1984, appointed me General Chairman of the Campaign, the first public official in the County (and as far as we could determine, the first in the United States) to hold that position.
