Danny’s Birthday on Super Bowl Sunday
By Gene Aronowitz
In 1993, the Super Bowl was played on the same day as Linda's brother's birthday. Danny is a football enthusiast, not as fervent as his brother Larry, but certainly devoted. Larry and Danny were watching the game that day and about a half-hour before game time, Linda thought it would be a good idea to wish Danny a happy birthday. I encouraged her to wait a little while. We waited until the captains were in the center of the field for the toss of the coin. When that was completed, I dialed all but the last digit of the telephone number and then I stopped. Unfortunately, there were two commercials but when they were over, I dialed all but the last digit again. After two more delays, the teams lined up. The kick-off team approached the ball, the kicker kicked and I finally got to dial the last number. The phone began to ring while the ball was in the air.
Danny picked up the phone and Larry could be heard in the background shouting, “Who the fuck is calling now?”
Danny thought the whole episode was funny until he heard me tell the story about the tenth time.
